British tennis hopeful Johanna Konta has been knocked out of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart. Her opponent Anastasija Sevastova, was the surprising victor in match that was played over just two rounds.
Konta had been expected to come out on top however, her lack of ability on clay courts seemed to be her downfall. Her victory over Naomi Osaka earlier that week was just her third ever win on clay.
This isn’t the first time Britain’s number one has suffered defeat at the hands of Sevastova, who was also responsible for making sure that Konta didn’t make it through to the final rounds of the US open last season. The final score in Stuttgart ended on 6-3 7-5.
Initially it seemed as though Konta had the upper hand as she broke Sevastova’s serve, the following three games, however, didn’t go her way. World number 26, Sevastova, played three aces consecutively in the opening set starting as she meant to go on in the match. The Latvian secured her win with her sixth ace.
Elsewhere in the Stuttgart, controversial Wild card, Maria Sharapova, has proven that she has what it takes to stay in the game despite her recent ban. The Russian was welcomed back onto the courts following her punishment concerning a medication she had taken that was proven to contain meldonium. Sharapova is now winging her way to the quarter-finals after beating Ekaterina Makarova 7-5 6-1.
Seeded number one, Angelique Kerber, was forced out of the contest after the second round, by Kristina Mladenovic. She was beaten 6-2 7-5. It would seem that anything is possible as we head towards the finals of the Porsche Grand Prix!
