Johanna Konta put in a good show, and saw off her opponent in the quarter final of the Miami Open. Simona Halep lost her stride against the British number one and the ladies singles match ended with a final score of 3-6, 7-6, (9-7), 6-2
Seeded number ten in the Miami based competition, Johanna Konta conceded just one break in the first set and followed that with an early lead in the second. Halep then managed to recover, but it didn’t last as Konta once again took the lead.
Speaking after the match Konta praised her opponent referring to her as an incredible player:
“I went up to a 3-0 lead and had chances to go 4-0 up, but she’s an incredible player and I knew it wouldn’t be over until we shook hands.”
The second set had the crowd on the edge of their seats as they anticipated what was going to happen next, a tie break took place only for the set to end in favour of Konta. The result seemed to agitate Halep who failed to get back into the swing of things. Two and a half hours after the match began, Konta walked away with the victory under her belt.
Twenty five year old, Konta will now have to face Venus Williams in tomorrow’s Miami Open semi-final. Williams, who is clearly on form managed to beat Angelique Kerber, in a short match, 7-5 6-3. The other semi-final match will see Caroline Wozniacki and Karolina Pliskova battle it out for a place in the final.
After crediting her challenger Konta added that she was happy with her game and that she was looking forward to the next round. Although she did state that she was fully aware of the fact that the next match wouldn’t be an easy one!
